Psilocybe were put taxonomically within the agaric family Strophariaceae based upon its spore and pileipellis morphology. The phylogenetic review by Matheny et al., positioned the non-bluing Psilocybe and its near family inside a basal placement inside the Strophariaceae, a sister taxon to a clade containing the other genera in just that loved ones
